The health care reform legislation signed into law earlier this year will potentially result in billions of dollars in new grant opportunities, addressing top issues within the health sector such as health information technology, disease management and prevention, wellness initiatives, and workforce development. Over $250 million has already been invested in new initiatives addressing health professional shortages and workforce development. Many of the programs are authorized for several years with funds committed through 2014. Programs that support new and innovated care management models are beginning to trickle out from the legislation. Future programs that support the primary care medical home concept in the context of accountable care organizations are anticipated by 2012. Health IT can be supported through these grant programs as a component of projects that address workforce issues, test and evaluate new models of care management and improve health care quality.
